Hockey Canada Skills Academy Coming to Sioux Mountain This September!
We are very excited to offer students in grades 1 to 8 the opportunity to enroll in a Hockey Canada Skills Academy starting in the fall of 2015. The Hockey Canada Skills Academy is a program designed to engage students in hockey during school hours to develop individual skills. Students will participate in on- and off-ice skill development and training. These activities will include: healthy living, nutrition, dry- land training and additional sports with transferable skills such as lacrosse, baseball and soccer. Throughout the program, students will also learn valuable life and employment skills such as teamwork, leadership, responsibility, perseverance, and problem solving. The development of these skills are critical to the academic achievement of our students.
Who can apply for the program?
Any boy or girl in grade 1 – 8 who is registered at Sioux Mountain for September, 2015 can apply. For those students who do not currently attend our school, parents must complete a school registration form for September 2015 along with the Hockey Academy application form.
Does my child already have to play hockey?
No. Any child regardless of hockey skill level may apply. We will also develop our program to ensure that students who already have experience and/or are enrolled in minor hockey have the opportunity to further develop their skill level.
Is there a cost to parents?
There will be no enrollment fees for our hockey skills academy. All parents will be asked to volunteer to support the program. This will include either volunteer time at the rink or participation in fundraising activities.
Will my child need to bring equipment?
We expect that some students will have equipment and others will need assistance. We are working with Jump Start to help support the needs of our students and their families.
How will students get to the arena?
Students will be bussed to the arena.
How will the Hockey Academy affect students’ academic program?
In the primary division, the program replaces the Health and Physical Education curriculum. In the junior and intermediate grades, students will be asked to complete additional homework to compensate for the time allotted to the hockey academy. Their academic program will have the same rigour as other students.
What are the expectations for students enrolled in the program?
Students enrolled in the program must attend school regularly, put forth a solid effort in their academic studies and follow the rules and procedures of the school and the program. Students will also be expected to satisfactorily demonstrate each of the following positive learning skills: responsibility, collaboration, initiative, organization, independence, and self-regulation.
How many hours per week will students participate in the Hockey Skills Academy?
The number of hours devoted to the program will vary from 100 minutes per week in primary and junior to 200 minutes per week in intermediate. On-ice time will begin in September and continue until April.

Sioux Mountain Hosts the First Rider Program
On Wednesday Sept 16th Sioux Mountain Public School, in conjunction with the Northwestern Ontario Student Services Consortium, hosted the annual “First Riders” Program. This is a bus safety awareness program provided for all Junior Kindergarten and new Senior Kindergarten students who have not previously ridden the school bus or participated in the program. Students from Sacred Heart school joined Sioux Mountain students first in the gym where consortium staff member Ray Heito talked about bus safety and showed a bus safety video to all students. Then students, along with their teachers boarded busses and went for a ride, practicing bus safety rules in the bus and bus safety while boarding and departing the bus. Special thanks to local Iron Range Bus Lines for providing the busses and drivers free of charge!
